Organizers are hoping to attract 16 teams for the 26th annual wheelchair basketball tournament on Jan. 23 at Branlyn Community Centre.
The tournament raises money for Participation House and Brantwood Community Services, which provide a range of services to people with developmental challenges. It is sponsored by the North Brantford Lions and Canadian Pioneers.
“This tournament is all about raising awareness, raising some money for both agencies and having a lot of fun,” said Doug Hunt, of Participation House.
“We have about 13 teams registered so far so we’d really like to add a couple of more to round out the day. The games are short and, really, we put a lot of emphasis on having fun. We want people to have a good time.”
The tournament, which started as a fundraiser for Participation House, has grown in popularity. Two basketball courts are needed to accommodate the number of teams.
“We’re all about partnerships and, over the past couple of years, we’ve had a number of groups come on board,” Hunt said. “We’re really pleased to be partnering with Brantwood because we have a lot in common with the services they provide and the people we serve.
“They bring a lot to the event, including volunteers, people who help make the event a success every year.”
The North Brantford Lions and the Canadian Pioneers have been integral to the success of the event over the years, Hunt said.
The tournament also gets help from the Brant Norfolk Basketball Officials Association, whose members donate their services for the event.
“That’s a big help,” Hunt said.
“I can referee but I’m only one person. And, with two games going on at the same time and games going all day, it’s really great to have them there.”
